“Busy” usually means inconsistent, not zero minutes.

An 80/20 approach doesn’t promise fluency in a month—it front-loads leverage: the few things that make everything else easier to add later.

Start from our Korean basics hub, run the Korean polite phrases quiz and Korean everyday phrases quiz, and use thank you / sorry / register as your politeness baseline.

For habits, 15 minutes a day beats occasional marathons.

The 20% that pays off first

1. Hangul (reading)
Until you can sound out words, you’re memorizing shapes as blobs.

This is non-negotiable—but it’s days to weeks, not months, if you drill daily.

2. Sentence endings: -요 and formal patterns
Most survival Korean runs on polite -요 speech.

Get comfortable hearing and producing 입니다 / 해요 / 주세요-class patterns before you chase slang.

3. A tiny “service phrase” set
Ordering, paying, apologizing, thanking—see café Korean, ordering food, and family / titles for concrete lines.

4. Listening recognition for common questions
Spicy? Here or to go? Card? You don’t need to answer elegantly—you need to recognize and say 네 / 아니요 / 카드요.

What to defer (without guilt)

  • Huge vocabulary lists unrelated to your week.
  • Idioms and memes before you can order food.
  • Fine-grained honorific theory before you can hold a basic polite exchange.

Defer ≠ never.

You’re sequencing.

One weekly plan (busy-friendly)

Block Focus
5× 10 min Hangul + short phrase audio (same phrases, new contexts)
2× 20 min Listening-only (commute counts)
1× 30 min Review weak items only—no new cards

Total: about 2 hours spread across the week.

Adjust up if you have more time.

80/20 and tools

Apps are fine if they protect consistency.

For vocabulary retention across tools (Anki, games, textbooks), the same principles apply—see our Japanese-focused comparison Anki vs games vs textbooks; the framework transfers to Korean.

Use it for retrieval on your phrase sets—food, family, apologies—so busy weeks still include active recall, not only passive scrolling.
