Der, die or das: a free German gender game

German gender is the part that never stops catching people out, because there is no reliable rule for most nouns. Work, travel, the city and the natural world. The next layer out. Sorting them repeatedly is closer to how you actually recall a gender than reading a list is.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this German game free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, no download, and no account.

How many nouns does it cover?

85 in this set, and there is a second set at a different level. Every noun is listed on this page as well as in the game.

Are these A1 or A2 nouns?

Neither, and any site telling you otherwise is guessing. The Goethe-Institut CEFR word lists are copyrighted and cannot be reproduced, so these are hand-picked everyday nouns grouped by how early you are likely to meet them.

Why is the article shown with every noun?

Because a German noun without its gender is only half learned. Meeting Tisch as der Tisch every time is far more effective than learning the word now and the gender later.

Can I make a game from my own German word list?

Yes, in the StudyArcade app. Paste any list of vocabulary and it builds a playable game from it.

Build a game from your own notes

This is a fixed sample. In the app you can paste any list or upload notes and get a playable game from them.
